Execu-move has compiled a few moving hints and tips to help you make your move as stress-free as possible.
If you are doing your own packing, please check the following:
Use strong cartons, as the packing boxes will be stacked in the removal vehicle.
Do not pack too many heavy items in one carton.
Pack room by room. This ensures less confusion at your destination.
Mark each carton with the contents and from which room it was packed.
Use only clean, unprinted newsprint for packing. It will not stain the items.
Ask your children to write your new address on the cartons. It will help them remember their new address.
Take your personal address book with you as well as a telephone directory.
Give your contact details to the driver / foreman, so he can stay in contact with you during the transit. Obtain the driver's mobile number, in the event that you need to contact him.
When unpacking, do so over the box you are unpacking, in case you drop something. It will then fall on the packaging material, thus reducing the chance of damage.
Do not pack inflammables, photos, financial papers, valuable jewelry or medical records. It is preferable to take as hand luggage.
Pack plates and books upright. Do not lay them flat in the carton. Place crushed newsprint at the bottom of the carton for added protection.
Discard any flammable substances and drain the fuel from all machinery being moved.
Other things to check before and on the removal day:
Defrost your refrigerator / freezer and make sure it is completely dry. Remove all the shelves and storage trays and get them wrapped separately in the packaging material.
Make sure all the gas heaters and gas bottles are safely sealed.
No gas bottles, whether empty or full, are allowed on shipping.
Check to see that all washing machines are dry and safe to remove.
Make sure your stove is disconnected from the mains and any removable parts removed and packed separately.
Make a backup of all the important information on your Hard Drive and store the CD or DVD in a secure container.
When packing, make sure that you pack all the cables, mouse and keyboard in one box to make reassembling easier at your new home.
When moving a printer, you need to remove the ink cartridges and place them in a plastic container. This will help prevent a leak that could damage your printer.
Pack the PC into a sturdy box that will protect it. If you do not have a suitable box, Execu-move will provide one to ensure the PC remains safe.
Place the plants carefully into a carton. The carton will help keep the temperature down and keep the plants safe from damage.
Dampen the soil of the plants before you pack them. (Do not water them to much as excess water will seep through or spill over and damage the carton)
When unpacking, do not expose the plants to too much direct sunlight as this may cause them to wilt.
Pets should have identification tags on at all times.
Pets cannot travel in the removal van. If needed, Execu-move can make the necessary arrangements for your pets.
Make sure your pet has a leash on at all times when out of the vehicle to ensure that they do not dash off the minute you open the door.
Consult your veterinary surgeon for a sedative that can be administered to the pets for the duration of the trip.
If your pet is traveling with you, make sure you have a bowl for water and a few treats for when you make stops.
